Christmas Was

Christmas was

a sunshine filled room in the early morning

pink painted wooden shelves with an uncle perched on top

unwrapping one at a time

grandma pacing between the stove and window

stories read from magazines older than we were

songs sung for parents

hot chocolate in santa’s boot

the advent wreath

being dropped off last from papa’s van

reindeer food spread by little hands

being the only one dressed up on Christmas morning

luminaries in the snow

rules for putting tinsel on trees

clementines in Christmas socks

glow in the dark plastic angels

cranberry coffee cake

divinity

Agnes’ pecan pie

date cookies for the older crowd

expectations of hope wrapped in skin
